HKDI Location

Established in 2007, Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is a leading design institution in Hong Kong under the VTC Group, providing quality education to cultivate knowledge, professionalism and new talents underpinning the creative industries in Hong Kong. HKDI integrates all design programmes in the former departments in Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) to offer a broad range of programmes from foundation studies, to Higher Diploma, and on to degree programmes offered in collaborations with reputable overseas universities. Programmes offered spanning across areas of visual communication, printing and digital media, industrial and product design, interior and environment design, fashion and textiles, and image design.

To achieve greater interdisciplinary synergy, the four new academic departments, including Department of Design Foundation Studies, Department of Communication Design and Digital Media, Department of Fashion and Image Design and Department of Product and Interior Design, operate in our new purpose-built campus at Tseung Kwan O in September 2010.

HKDI adopts a “Think and Do” approach through contemporary curriculum and active collaborations with industries. The comprehensive design programmes are enriched with activities to nurture strengths with creative thinking skills, cultural sensitivity and global perspectives. The self-motivated study and guided learning enhances students’ development on independent thinking and self- confidence. The programmes also emphasise interdisciplinary studies and multi-focused explorations in accordance to individual student’s abilities and career aspirations.

Learning environment
The new HKDI campus is a winning design by a French Architect in an International Architectural Design Competition. The architecture derives its inspiration from the idea of a white sheet of paper, a metaphor for creativity symbolizing the universal medium of designers. It provides students with a creative and conducive, dynamic and vibrant learning environment for nurturing their creativity, innovation, independent learning, self-confidence and free thinking.

Academic Links
Through academic study visits to Europe, USA, Japan, China's Mainland and other Asian countries, students and staff are exposed to latest international design trend. International speakers regularly make visits to the Institute and contribute to the courses. International professionals are also engaged to a cross-cultural platform for discourse, offering students valuable insight into the different aspects of design thinking and implementation.

Industry Linkage
A strong network of industry contacts is maintained through which students are exposed to current and contemporary design practices. There are good linkages between the courses and the region's creative industries. Experienced design practitioners, industry representatives and consultants are regularly invited to participate in industry focused lectures, seminars and presentations in the courses. Joint projects with commerce and industry provide essential and practical experience for all students. Summer work placements further enhance students' industrial experience.
